Shearing Action: The four adjustable hard tool steel knives are bolted to a removable rotor. These knives work against six stationary knives bolted into the frame. The shearing action tends to avoid changes in the sample due to temperature increase, moisture loss, liquefaction, contamination, etc. caused by crushing and abrasion methods. The clearance of opposing knives is precisely adjusted for shearing clearance. Each stationary knife is independently adjustable. The fan effect of knives provides increased throughput and quick clearing of the chamber.

The Thermal Twin process offers new opportunities in extruded foods. For example, products that are high in corn or rice content can be processed without the stickiness previously encountered in other extruder designs. Starches may be fully cooked without damage to functional and organoleptic properties.
In pet food applications, the ability to use high levels of thermal energy also provides the potential to produce specialty foods and treats with up to 90 percent fresh meat (as a percent of the dry recipe) and up to 40 percent moisture without changing the extruder configuration.

The Thomas Wiley® Mini-Mill features a polished chamber, 40 mm diameter x 22 mm deep; two stationary blades; and a rotor with four cutting edges that revolve at high speed to produce a shearing action which minimizes loss of moisture from heat. This cutting mill produces a 20-gram, 40-mesh sample of dried plant stem tissue in 15 to 20 minutes; a similar sample of extracted leaf tissue in 7 to 10 minutes; or 13 mm pieces of soybean stems in 5 to 7 minutes. Dried samples are generally used, but tobacco with 12% moisture has been milled satisfactorily.
